The Universiade is the international sports competitions among students held under the aegis of the International University Sports Federation (FISU). The word Universiade originates from the words University and Olympiad (the Olympic Games).
Unlike the four-year Olympic cycle, the University Games take place every two years. Students, post-graduates and alumni (graduated in the two years prior to the Universiade) aged from 17 to 28 can become the participants of the competition.
The Universiade Programme includes compulsory and optional (additional) sports. FISU approves the list of compulsory sports for every University Games before the bidding campaign. The optional sports may be included into the programme at the wish of the host country provided that these sports totally comply with all requirements of the International University Sports Federation.
The athletes of the Winter Universiade 2019 will compete for medals in eight sports: Alpine Skiing, Biathlon, Cross-Country Skiing, Ice Hockey, Short Track Speed Skating, Snowboarding, Figure Skating and Curling.
